Foundation Pack for children from as young as 2, up to 4 years

The pack is intended to give practical work which helps to develop an underlying understanding of the concepts of number and sounds which will lead your child into the more formal work in Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2).

Children can be ready for these activities when they are as young as 2 and a half, or as "old" as 4 years! When they are interested they WILL learn quickly. We have designed the work to progress gradually, so your child won't feel overwhelmed by new information.

Don't forget that you have already taught your child to walk, talk, get dressed, eat without help, etc, etc. These are all difficult tasks which have been achieved because of your relationship with your child. The work in this new Foundation Pack is simply a continuation of this learning partnership.

The schedule is for 30 weeks, five days a week, with regular reinforcement to develop confidence. One hour a day at this age is sufficient to spend on more formal learning. It is really important that most of the day is still spent in play.

The pack teaches reading through a structured synthetic phonics programme using games and puzzles to develop an understanding of spelling patterns. Letter formation is practised with cross-referenced handwriting workbooks to gradually build up confidence in reading, spelling and handwriting.

Comprehension and writing composition is developed through discussion using a variety of writing styles in reputable textbooks.

Maths concepts such as number, size, sorting, are developed with the help of colourful practical equipment with recording being secondary to experiencing the work.

An interest in science is encouraged through a number of investigations with clear suggestions for recording the work in a variety of ways.

Art, music, cookery and ICT are also introduced in a very practical way, since we believe that children learn best when they are actively involved.
